THE EXPLOSIONS of Cai Guo-Qiang
A bizarre artist, with the craze for the fireworks, Cai Guo-Qiang,of Chinese origin now lives and works in New York, he has always been torn between East and West, art and politics, tradition and modernity. A true child of art; his father was an expert in calligraphy and collector of manuscripts and rare books. From time works in Pharaonic projects to communicate with extraterrestrials, the existence of which he believes without a doubt.
And ‘the founder of museums UMoCA, spaces infested by gadgets, toys, t-shirts and other things which lie instead in a dusty basement. Metaphor more explicit of the state of our art centers, which he loves and which not coincidentally has sometimes simulated the explosion: the Smak Ghent for example. In 1999 he won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.
Cai Guo-Qiang is not a pyromaniac as one is tempted to think it is a performance artist, who does not believe in the work at all traditional, but instead endorses languages immediate.
It ‘an artist who does not just represent the world but wants to change it, Cai Guo-Qiang aspires to expansion, enlargement, the involvement of physical spaces and human minds. Its Chinese origin, the idea of man as an integral part of the universe, the need to identify energy lines linking the self to the world, united to the idea of art as becoming (concept most Western and Eastern) they help us to the use of fire, the need to destroy in order to recreate something.
